Kirkuk Workshops
Kirkuk Dance and Theater Workshops
On July 2, a team of three American Voices Hip Hop dance and classical music specialists visited youth centers and the Institute of Fine Arts in Kirkuk for a series of workshops with children aged 4 to 14. The children are participants in the summer arts programs of the Kurdistan Save the Children Fund and demonstrated a remarkable affinity for learning the basics of Hip Hop Dance and Break Dancing in lessons with Rick Camargo and Michael Parks Masterson. Over fifty children participated in the three hour event which was planned as a fact-finding mission for eventual future longer-term projects in Kirkuk. Some highlights of the workshop included a special session for the B-Girls, an introduction to ballet and a short movement improvisation workshop. The American Voices team then visited the Kirkuk Institute of Fine Arts. The Institute is housed in a crumbling building that was previously used as a barracks for the Iraqi army prior to 2003. Serving over 400 high school and college aged students of all ethnic and sectarian groups from throughout the city and region, the Institute, despite summer vacation, was a lively place where American Voices was able to engage with many theater and music students and faculty about their institutions' needs and their plans to join the Unity Academies in Suleimaniya and Erbil in July. American Voices is planning a significant donation of music scores and instruments to the Institute this July and will be inviting approximately 50 students and faculty to our music and theater programs in Suleimaniya July 6 to 15.
