Alumni of our previous YES Academy programs do not need to audition for the program, but are required to apply online. New students in our music programs will need to either audition live on the morning of Monday August 22 at 9am at the Institute of Fine Arts, Erbil or submit a 2-3 minute video posted on YouTube as part of your application. Those auditioning online will be notified by phone and by email by August 18 if they have been accepted. Festival Concerts by faculty and the gala closing concert will take place as follows during the week of August 21-31 on Institue of Fine Arts, Erbil.- Faculty Recital August 30 at 7 pm
- YES Closing Concert, August 31 at 7 pm
Housing, Transportation, Meals and Scholarships
- Tuition to the program is free.
- We will offer a bed in the Mondeal Hotel in Erbil to 40 participants
- We will pay for breakfast (provided by the hotel) and a simple lunch (sandwich + pepsi + chips)
- We will reimburse gas expenses to anyone who drives AND bring at least 2, preferably 3, other participants with them. We will reimburse bus / taxi service expenses to those who cannot come in their or someone else’s car. At this point there is NO BUDGET for people from Baghdad or Basra unless they come by bus.
- If someone wants a scholarship they must send a link to a short video or audio file.
- Erbil Residents: are all welcome. You may audition on the first day of class: We cannot pay for any local transportation or meals.
- Self-funded: if there is someone from outside Erbil who we did not accept for a scholarship who can stay with friends or family in Erbil, pay their own meals and transportation they can attend self-funded.

Festival Strings / Bashy Zhedary Festival
For intermediate and advanced students aged 18+ that have played violin, viola, cello or bass for at least 3 years and want to improve their skills as soloists, chamber musicians and orchestra musicians.

We have developed a program for high-end instrumental genres such as soloists, chamber musicians as well as ensemble musicians.
Participants will develop their knowledge of baroque music, new solo and ensemble and chamber music repertoire. Students can participate in string orchestra, piano or string chamber ensemble, Masterclass, private lessons, and more activities. The high level in the Barouqe Ensemble is just a test run.

For advanced students aged 16+ who want to improve their pianistic skills, explore traditional and new repertoire as well as engage in new musical activities such as vocal accompaniment and chamber music.

The piano program is designed to enhance the future of Iraqi teachers and musicians, who will be able to enhance their piano skills, expand their repertoire, and engage in a range of activities, including vocal and chamber music with piano artists. Students should participate in the following activities:

- Piano groups (4 hands, 2 hands)
- Piano products and supervisors in the repertoire of new and modern styles, dancers and repertoire in U.S, Asia, France, etc.
- Advice and training for university students for high school students

- Participate with own voice as a voice actor in a classic voice program

Composition / Dananî Muzîk
The composition program will be offered for students ages 18+ interested in improving their skills and knowledge in composition, arranging, orchestration, music theater and contemporary music literature of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The composition program will be offered for young and young professional composers and arrangers with an interest in improving their skills and knowledge in composition, arranging, orchestration, music theater and contemporary music literature of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Led by composer and cellist Avery Waite (The Juilliard School), the class will focus on the completion of an assignment of a 2 to 5 minute piece for string quartet given in advance of the start of the program. Completed compositions will be read by faculty and advanced participants and several will be selected for public performance at the final concert. Outstanding compositions will be given consideration for performances in the United States.
Built upon the success of the Iraq Young Composers Initiatives in 2012 and 2013, the 2015 program continues to be the only training available for Iraqi composers.

Youth Strings / Bashy Zhedar (String) Bo Lawa
For students aged 12 to 18 that have played violin, viola, cello or bass for at least one year. Includes string orchestra, group lessons, musical games and other activities.

The Youth Strings Program is for string musicians playing violin, viola, cello or bass.
Classes will take place each morning from 9:00-13:00. New students must audition on the morning of Monday August 24 on the campus of Suleimaniya University or submit an audition video. Students must have at least one full year of playing experience, be able to bring their instrument to class and read music in order to participate. Please prepare one solo and be preparing to play a major or minor scale at the audition. You will also be auditioned for your reading ability.
Classes will include string orchestra, group lessons, chamber music and private lessons.
This class will be lead by violist Kim Mai Nguyen and cellist Avery Waite, both graduates of the Julliard School in New York City and frequent leaders of youth string programs round the world. They have performed around the world in venues ranging from the United Nations Assembly and the Spoleto Festival to the El Sistema programs of Jamaica and Afghanistan.

Admission by live or video audition only. This is a half-day morning program that includes private lessons, solo, duet and ensemble playing and guided listening of the woodwind repertoire.
